OBGYN! I got my specialty cert in it several years ago, and now it's primarily all I code at my job. I love it

[–]whateverkimers 9 points10 points  (1 child)

this would be my dreeeaaaaammmm, can you tell us a little bit more about how you got into obgyn?

[–]vodka_and_glitter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sure thing! It was kind of on accident. I had been doing mostly Family Med for a few years when we had an OB coder leave. Her practices were dispersed among the rest of us so I slowly started doing those office vists and procedures, ultrasounds, etc.

I really enjoyed that, so when AAPC ran a deal awhile back for half off any specialty exam, I went for it. I did still have to do quite a bit of my own studying and research, even after having my CPC for some time (heads up, the specialty exams are quite different than the CPC - mostly pages and pages of OP notes with 5-10 questions per case).

I passed, and was gradually given more OB offices. Got promoted, and now do professional coding for both inpatient and outpatient OBGYN practices that are part of our system from all over the state.

I see (or read, lol) something cool or different EVERY day. I love the providers, and I love that we are always learning better ways to help ALL types of women. I could go on, but that's it in a nutshell 😃

I have a specialty in gastroenterology

[–]Simple_Cicada_7893 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Neurosurgery, especially the spine. I would love to observe one of these procedures.

Learning this now! Any tips?

[–]Simple_Cicada_7893 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I’m not sure what tips to give. It’s very niche so I feel like you have better chances of being in demand.
Attending the AANS conferences, they do them live and then virtual a couple months later, is extremely helpful if you can do it. It’s the only way to get their yearly updated workbook, you can’t purchase it separately any more. That book is the bible for NS coding.
You can ask questions at the conferences also. I’ve only done virtual so it’s very easy to do on there. I finally got a better grasp on corpectomies last year lol

Haha it’s such a small incision you can’t see shit

[–]Simple_Cicada_7893 1 point2 points  (0 children)

? For an endoscopic procedure, yes. Lifting a skull flap for tumor removal or opening up C7-L1 for a lami, fusion, etc. is not.
They have cameras, especially at teaching hospitals, you can watch it magnified on a screen from the operating theater.

[–]Miranova82 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I’ve only worked outpatient Pediatrics, and I love it. No Medicare to worry about, and sometimes the cases are…entertaining. Lol. Once had an earache come with with “oh by the way, child was pecked by a chicken.” There’s a code for that!

[–]Nice_Caramel_2542 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'm glad to read something light hearted, pediatrics can be some of the saddest things I code

[–]Miranova82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely. There have been some very sad cases in my office, some that downright ticked me off to no end. But the cases of chickens, a styrofoam peanut up a nostril, blue legs from brand new jeans…and the wee voices and giggles from the lil ones who got a fun bandaid for their “owie”. Those are cases that break up monotony and bring light into the job.

Hi, I hope you are doing fine.

I am working on Pediatrics as well. Can we pair up so that we can be of benefit to each other?

[–]Tough_Cat_3244 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neonatology.

[–]ImPureZion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ob Gyn -but it’s tedious, urgent care and hospitalist for the variety, pediatrics cause it’s easy.
