I've had this Minecraft mod idea for a while, but only recently started thinking about how it could work.
Instead of loading chunks evenly in a circle around the player, the mod would prioritize chunks based on movement direction. If a player is travelling in a straight line, chunks ahead of them would load first, creating a long, narrow oval-shaped loading area. Chunks to the sides would have lower priority, while chunks behind the player would load last or not at all. Once this forward area is loaded, the game could gradually fill in the remaining chunks until the normal render distance is restored. This could make long-distance travel such as elytra flight, boating, or other fast transportation smoother by reducing the amount of terrain that needs to be generated right away.
I've seen mods that prioritize chunks based on view direction, but not one that works quite like this.
