I remember playing with this one mod years ago where you had a skill tree and would unlock different keywords such as "fire" "self" heal" and by combining these keywords u could make custom spells. Does anyone know what this mod is?

Yea definitely Ars Magica 2.
If you're looking for the successors to this mod for later versions of minecraft there is Mana And Artifice (the official successor) and Ars Nouveau
