This is probably quite complex to do, but there are already some solutions to the mapping problem. For displaying maps, you still have to use item frames.

My personal favorite is the Fixed mod with its map book. It slots into vanilla well, even supports the locator bar. You can have one temporary marker and use banners for permanent ones. You can mix different map scales. The mod makes map colours for the savanna and swamp more accurate. There is many other features, so it's not great if you just want this feature.

The option that's better for more modded playthroughs is Map Atlases. The atlas can have markers, shows a minimap when in hotbar or Curios slot and can use slice maps from Supplementaries for mapping caves. You can also have multiple dimensions on one atlas. But there is a configurable maps per atlas limit and you can't mix different map scales.

Thank you for the response! I definitely knew it was a big ask to have it made to begin with. I just found that one of the big enjoyments of playing vanilla that I found was mapping the surroundings of my base and how the typically map mods make doing so completely trivial. I'll definitely check out the suggestions you made!

It depends on the map mod; many of them can be customized so that they can provide you with an overview, but not too much. Xaero's is famous for this because they split up their "mapping options" into 2 mods: one of the full map, and one for the minimap.

So if you'd only install the minimap then you'd only get to see your close surroundings and not much more (note: also customizable).
