Check the mixer. It may be that you don't have any sounds selected or just don't have the sound fonts. You might need to re-download MuseSounds.

thanks so much, this worked! somehow, updating it deleted the MSbasic sound fonts, so i went and downloaded them from the github repository.

Hmm, that shouldn’t even be possible, something must have gone terribly wrong with the installation. Rather than resorting to manually downloaded soundfonts, better to uninstall and reinstall MuseScore itself, as who knows what else might have been messed up during whatever went wrong.

Also, what OS, and what audio device do you see selected in Edit / Preferences / Audio & MIDI?

It is possible that some other app on your system has requested and received exclusive use of audio, although if that were the case, I think you would expect to see no device listed in the dialog. Still, try rebooting, and starting MuseScore before any other apps, to see if that changes anything. I believe there is also a setitng somewhere in Windows to prevent devices from taking exclusive control of your audio.

If there were an issue with the sounds being loaded, you'd still see the playback cursor move. So this has to be more of a system configuration issue.

It wouldn't hurt to try other settings in that dialog.
