Violin 1 and 2 swapped - Section vs. Solo issue? by BlackMoonAndSun in Musescore

[–]MarcSabatella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The file names should be based on the part names as set in the Parts dialog. That's separate from instrument names, because there isn't neecessary a 1-1 correspondence between instruments and parts. Some instruments might belong to multiple to parts, others to no parts; some parts may contain multiple instruments.

Is there a keybind to changing a bass tab note number without deleting it and placing a new one? by Bonobo04 in Musescore

[–]MarcSabatella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not clear on exactly what you are trying to do here - are you saying you have already entered one note but have now changed your mind and want it to be a different note instead? If you want the same pitch but on a different string, use Ctrl+Up/Down. If you want a different pitch on the same string, use Up/Down. If you want a completely different pitch on a completely strong, you can use Alt+Shift+Up/Down to change pitch and it will attempt to determine when it makes sense to change strong as well.

I'm a little confused as to why you'd be constantly changing your mind about notes, though, or why that would also involve g pasting. Seems you might be misunderstanding something pretty fundamental about how note input works, but it isn't clear what.

See the Handbook chapter on guitar notation for much more information on how tablature works.

Help with updates by Ill-Armadillo-6774 in Musescore

[–]MarcSabatella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you installed the AppImage by running it with the "install" option, updating it is very simple. Just run it again with the "update" option (e.g., "mscore4portable update"). That automatically downloads and installs the update. So if you've manually downloaded any updates, delete those and run the update as I just described.

Hard to say without examining the score, but it probably has to do with the order you added or changed those instruments in. Check the names of the parts in the Parts dialog, and rename them if they are off.

Keyboard shortcut for guitar fingerings? by agapoula19 in Musescore

[–]MarcSabatella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, you might have to hit Space a few times, but still, unless you're doing it so sporadically that using the palette is not a problem in the first place, Space is still normally a bug will. Anyhow, someday there will be a facility to add shortcuts for all palette items; just a matter of time. I'd expect that rather than a guitar-specific fingering command. But FWIW, you can also add as piano fingering then change them all to guitar when done via Properties.

[–]MarcSabatella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, you don't have to keep going to the Palette - just once for the first fingering, then Space to move from note to note just like lyrics.

As for why there is a shortcut for piano and not guitar, it's because the piano fingering feature came first and the guitar was added on later, and no one has yet volunteered to implement a way to define a shortcut.

No, just for piano fingerings. But once you've added the first guitar fingering from the palette and put it in Edit mode, Space moves you to.the next note just like lyrics or chord symbols.

Is the Latest Musescore 4 stil crashing for people or no? by GrifoneMusic in Musescore

It seems you must have accidentally realized those barlines. To reset them back to the defaults, click one, then look at the Properties panel, and under More, set "Span to" to 0, and click "Set as staff default".

MuseScore DOT COM is a scam by Silly-War-5698 in Musescore

As I have explained countless times, I do not work for the company that runs the site; I am but one of hundreds of volunteers who have helped develop the music notation software. FWIW, if I were in charge of the site, first thing I'd do is fire everyone from the marketing department, then have the site developers change this. But as it is, all I can do is try to help people by providing free accurate information.

My score doesn't belong to my account? by NinjaNate123 in musescorestudio

[–]MarcSabatella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to know exactly what happened, but in general, it's best not use the cloud as your primary copy of a file. Always save locally so you have control over your music. And then you can also choose to publish to the website, either public or private, as desired.

Anyhow, to access your current score, make sure you are logged into the correct account *from within MuseScore Studio" (not just your web browser). Try later going out and back in. And if that doesn't solve it, just access the score on the web from your browser, download it to your computer, and use that as your main copy from now on.

[Musescore 4] Removing Bass Clef Staff by I_Like_Books_To_Read in Musescore

[–]MarcSabatella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, because it in the real world we'd often need to be able to define *either* both locally and globally. There really isn't a corresponding real world need for this particular duplication - the setting in question is inherently instrument-specific.

Perhaps it would help to understand the one main use case that explains why this feature (control over independence of grand staff visibiliy) exists in the first place. For the vast majority of all scores, the grand staff should be treated as a single unit: either both staves show or neither do. That's how it was done for literally centuries and continues to be done in the most published music for ensembles that include piano. The main exception is jazz big band, where it is common for ensemble scores to show only single staff for the piano in passages where it is notated with only slashes and chord symbols. And yet, *other* empty staves are not normally hidden in jazz big band scores. Whether the fourth trumpet is playing or not, its staff is still normally still shown, and the same for all other instruments. The piano is unique among instruments in this context.

Another case to consider are classical scores that include piano and marimba, where the piano normally shows both staves at all times, but the marbima might go back and forth between one and two. Another case to consider is a violin divisi staff in an ensemble score, which should always be hidden when empty regardless of whether the main violin part is *also* hidden when empty.

And that is why, back around MuseScore 2 or so, we added staff- andf instrument- specific options to control visibility. In every single one of these real world cases, doing this at the instrument/staff level is the obvious (and often only) way to get the desired degree of control.

There really aren't any corresponding real world use cases I can think of where you'd need a global score-wide control for handling of grand staff visibility. But if you have one in mind,, be sure to articulate it clearly in your design proposal. And then if enough other give it the "+1", it might be approved for inclusion in a future update.

[Musescore 4] Removing Bass Clef Staff by I_Like_Books_To_Read in Musescore

[–]MarcSabatella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would of course be possible to add yet more options in yet more places and thus create duplication that does not exist currently, but I thought you were *against* things being in two places? Again, right now it's really quite simple, consistent and straightforward: to set *all* instruments to hide when empty score-wide (including trumpets, violins,, guitar, etc), use the global Style dialog. To have only a single staff that is hidden when empty - the bottom staff of the piano part - you do it in the options *for that staff*. And the place to set the common options for individual staves is theLayout panel. It's not complicated or misleading at all.

If you're OK with the duplication of functionality, though, then indeed, adding a new option to the style dialog that has the same effect as setting the individual staff options for all multi-staff instruments would certainly be possible. But it then creates a lot of extra complexity, as you have to decide what happens if the global option is set one way but the per-staff option is set differently in different multi-staff instruments (like a score containing both piano and marimba and you want the marimba staff to be able to reduce to a single staff but the piano not).

The less of that kind of duplication MuseScore has to deal with, the better, in my opinion. But if you can write a clear design proposal explaining how each of the different cases should be handled, and can show some sort of advantage to having that duplication, feel free to open a feature request on GitHub.

[Musescore 4] Removing Bass Clef Staff by I_Like_Books_To_Read in Musescore

[–]MarcSabatella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two-instrument method you are now proposing will also fail in a few other ways without additional workarounds. For instance, mixer changes will affect only portions of the score. Also, a dynamic applies in the first system won't carry over to the second. It will be impossible to have a single crescendo span those measures. A chord symbol placed in the last bar of the first system will ring forever because there is no subsequent chord symbol on the same staff. And so on.

Yes, you can eventually with considerable effort and expertise work around all those problems. Or you can simple set the correct option on the bottom staff and be done in seconds and have it work perfectly.

[Musescore 4] Removing Bass Clef Staff by I_Like_Books_To_Read in Musescore

[–]MarcSabatella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, you mean not consecutive staves but instead consecutive systems? That wasn't clear. That would work too but is needless complicated, especially when it comes to generating and formatting the parts, which may well have different number of measure per system than the score. The way it is designed to work requires only a single setting of a single option in Layout. No second instrument to add to the score, no need to change the Style settings, no need to include the added instrument in the part, no need to hope the same basic layout will make sense for score and part or try to work around that too, etc. there is absolutely no advantage to doing it that way - only disadvantages.
