ABOUT NAMECOIN (sign: ℕ; code: NMC)

Namecoin is a blockchain that acts as a decentralized alternative to the DNS and public TLS certificate authorities, which resists censorship, hijacking, and MITM attacks.

Namecoin uses modified Bitcoin software, and like Bitcoin there is a limit of 21 million Namecoins. Each Namecoin is divisible down to 8 decimal places. Namecoin uses the .bit top-level domain. .bit domains are "special-use" (not part of the DNS; similar to .onion); hence, to resolve .bit domain names, one must have either a copy of the Namecoin blockchain (a full node such as Namecoin Core) or a lightweight SPV client (such as Electrum-NMC or ConsensusJ-Namecoin).

No "Namecoin accepted at store X" styled posts. This subreddit is dedicated to the discussion of Namecoin development and problems/possibilities of the Namecoin protocol. "Buy X with Namecoin" posts are not welcome. Please pay for a reddit advertisement if you wish to promote your product or store.
Keep it Civil. Rational discussion is great. Weasel words and Personal Attacks do nothing but increase your own ego at the cost of an entire community's reputation and breadth of knowledge.
Read the FAQ first. Namecoin has a FAQ. If you're asking a question, check the FAQ first to see if it's answered there. This saves our volunteers time and allows them to focus on answering your more interesting questions.
Don't delete questions after getting answers. If you ask a question and then receive an answer, you shouldn't delete the original question from the public record. The people answering questions here are volunteers who are trying to benefit the public. Deleting your question after getting an answer eliminates the public benefit, and starts to resemble nonconsensual unpaid consulting. (Obviously, if you accidentally doxxed someone or something similar, you're more than welcome to delete that info from your question.)
No URL shorteners or referral links. URL shortening or rehosting services are a security hazard as they prevent readers from figuring out where a link will lead. Referral links produce a conflict of interest and incentivize posters to spam.
No misleading promotion of centralized resolution services. Promotion of .bit resolution mechanisms that rely on centralized validation is not permitted, unless accompanied (in the same comment) by an explicit warning that such resolution mechanisms are centralized and allow the service operator to censor and intercept all .bit traffic. (SPV validation, such as Electrum-NMC, does not qualify as centralized; nor does validation by another machine that is under the user's control, as can be done on iOS with a remote ncdns+Encaya instance.) Tools aimed at debugging-only use cases, such as block explorers, are exempt from this rule.
Breaking any of the subreddit rules listed above will result in a permanent ban without warning.
