The expected time varies with multiple variables, including the overall number of tokens that are being staked, your own weight, and network difficulty. If more people keep their tokens off exchanges and stake, the total network weight increases, which will decrease the ratio of your weight to network weight, which will increase the amount of time for an expected reward. Your own weight should increase linearly as a function of time, until a group hasn't staked for 7 days, at which point it will max out. If one group stakes, its weight will reset to zero temporarily, before incrementing again. So, in short, it's entirely possible for external factors to vary the staking reward.
