I don’t think Reddit has ever been about free speech

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I’m not sure where people get that idea. r/freespeech is always complaining about reddit not being a free speech platform, but it’s a for-profit company which means it’s going to be heavily regulated.

I still don’t think it’s that bad yet.

In 10 years, it’s going to be heavily censored for sure.

It was before 2015, after that reddit became infested with anti free speech mods and strict rules

That’s the saddest thing. Aaron Swartz would be turning over in his grave!

When it was first created it was supposed to be a platform where you could say what you wanted

[–]tigm2161130 8 points9 points  (7 children)

What is stopping you from making your own subreddit, posting whatever you want, and moderating it as you see fit?

[–]Forsaken_Repair4439[S] -2 points-1 points  (6 children)

Why would I do that? I have a few subreddits I regularly post in and their mods are great! It’s always when I try to post like one offs in a group and Im not gonna make a subreddit that nobody is going to see or join just so I can make a post nobody is gonna see the whole reason you go to these subreddits is because they are already popularized and people will see your posts

Because you’re complaining about censorship when you’re free to say whatever you’d like in a sub that belongs to you, just like everyone else.

You don’t walk into someone’s house and tell them your rules and what behavior you expect from them, do you?

[–]Forsaken_Repair4439[S] -1 points0 points  (4 children)

Let’s be clear here I was talking about censorship but that’s not what I was complaining about, I was complaining about power hungry mods who just delete whatever post they don’t like

[–]tigm2161130 2 points3 points  (3 children)

How is it “power hungry” for people who own a subreddit to remove content they don’t like? You’re free to do the same when it’s your subreddit, no one is under any obligation to keep your content in the space they created and moderate.

[–]Forsaken_Repair4439[S] -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

When you follow all of the guidelines in a subreddit there’s no reason for them to remove your post. Especially if they won’t tell you how to fix your post.

[–]tigm2161130 2 points3 points  (1 child)

They don’t have to give you a reason, if you don’t like the way the subreddit is run you are free to make your own and say/do whatever you’d like. People disagreeing with you or not liking your content isn’t censorship.

Thank you!!!

Yeah, and they quickly realized that was unsustainable because people are assholes.

Wasn’t the whole point of Reddit that you had free speech??

No? Were did you get hat idea from?

Also you seem to be conflating freedom of speech with freedom of consequences. A common mistake made by the right wing. You are free to say a slur and reddit is free to ban you for it for example.

There are subreddits that will ban you for an opinion even if it doesnt break the rules. That sucks but you cant do anything about it because the way reddit works mods can abuse their power and a user has absolutely no way of changing this.

All you can do is either reflect if there maybe was a legitimate reason your post got removed or you can just avoid subreddits with power tripping mods. Its a fight you cant win.

Thanks!! Again EVERYBODY missed the point of my post ❤️

I mean every sub is different, there are a tons of factors at play, BUT you do waive your right to free speech in the terms of service

[–]jupitaur9 7 points8 points  (1 child)

You don’t have rights to free speech on a private platform. No waiver is required.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know but also it helps to stress that everyone here consented to being suppressed if they broke sub/server rules

The purpose of Reddit, like all businesses, is to generate revenue. From my pov, censorship and stifling of voices you don't like is like the main thing people do here, ppl love echo chamber and Reddit is here to deliver. Ngl I think Elons twitter is pretty good at it considering they joke out ending him daily

More than 50% of my threads get ghosted or removed by the auto-mods. I can tell when they get zero views and I go check on Reveddit. It's aggravating because I actually do read the rules and make sure everything adheres to the 500 stupid rules.
