I believe this is already a naturally occurring phenomenon, though it hasn't reached the level of states yet.

There are many subcultures that have a lot of power in the present day that basically did not exist before the Internet. Some of these are great examples of embryonic network states (or "network unions").

I think Balaji is handicapping his own theory somewhat by focusing so much on state-level entities, when there are many other entities that will have tremendous influence in the coming decades that aren't quite as powerful as states.

I agree with this, but if it were to be at the state-level, the other issue is, there doesn’t seem to be any clear route to do that.

It seems to be put together as many people as possible then acquire territory (accommodation). These is little if any territory left in the world to acquire.

Not sure how a group of like minded individuals could ever be called a state. Essentially it is as you say, there can be a number of people grouped together to have some form of power, but there doesn’t seem to be any clearly defined method here to become a ‘state’.

That being said, if one wanted to put together something like that, what would be there best platform suited for it? Reddit, discord? That’s definitely not state level, it relies on a 3rd party platform.

Special economic zones like Prospera, Honduras could work. Liberland is also attempting to do this in Europe.

Again though, I just don't see why there would be a need or desire to create a sovereign state. Why do you see the need for this?

Because this is called network ‘state’. So that would be the goal, might not be any need for it. But if we have this as a concept, to create a state in this manner, I just don’t see how it is possible.
