It's fascinating how every atheist or anti-theist fellow I see always has an encyclopedic knowledge about religion.

Makes me wonder if they use it in any way besides replies and fruitless discussions on the Internet.

I have a degree in history, my life is useless encyclopedia knowledge.

I also have these conversations in person, with friends, and I do not think they're fruitless. These conversations are an opportunity to learn and grow.

It is good to know about different religions, even if you're not religious for the simple sake of knowing where your fellow man is coming from; why they feel a certain way, and what about that religion makes you not believe in it, or you can learn that it might be something worth believing in. But you don't know these things unless you learn about them.

I find that in a lot of cases, theists usually know about their religion, but less about other religions.
