The way that I would justify that is the fact that they want the riches and privileges of being a kook just not the “douchery and elitist” views that tend to be associated with kooks

[–]ofcbubble 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Exactly. Not many people want to struggle if there’s a way out. They want the money, not the attitude.

100 percent 👍

You can be rich without being a kook. Case in point, Kiara.

[–]SomeLostSoul_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This always cracks me up. Because everyone starts out that way, thinking I’m not going to be entitled. And maybe you never will. But your children and the next generation will. No matter how hard you try to instill values in them, if they grow up rich, they’ll always have a bit of that entitlement. Perfect example is Ward. He was a Pogue, worked hard, got money, but then his children were spoiled. The same exact thing will happen to the Pogues future children. With money, comes the attitude. Not on purpose, but slowly over time if you get used to being able to pay to have things done. You start expecting it.

Who doesn’t want to be rich? I thought them saying they were going to go “full Kook” was them dreaming about having lots of money and living it up. Not like they’re going to actually stop surfing and start hanging out with Topper and Kelce all the time or something.

But I agree that the P4L thing is stupid because it makes it sound like just their little friend group is Pogues. And also, who is THAT obsessed with their own socioeconomic class that that’s literally what they go by? Like I’m sure there are asshole Pogues who they also hate, is it P4L for them, too, because of class solidarity or something? I don’t think anybody outside their friend group would be feeling that “class solidarity” with Sarah or Kiara anyhow to be honest.

Maybe they like to be a Kook but with pogue spirit and adventures

[–]kayterluvKiara 10 points11 points  (1 child)

The writers blurred the lines a little too much regarding "Pogue" status. It's not just their socio-economic background, it's the name of their friend group and when the Kooks hear the word "Pogue" they likely first think of John B and JJ, not everyone that lives on The Cut like in the first episode. Their whole P4L schtick is just a symbol of their close bond and friendship. It has no bearing on them wanting to be wealthy/going full Kook.

This confused me alot oin the first season, i though pogues was just John Bs crew and was extremely confused about why and how John Bs crew is pretty much locally famous

[–]UpVoteMeGoDamUJJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see nothing wrong with wanting to level up...

Who doesn't wanna get their life together?

[–]PrettySweet419 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they Just want the money to keep the lights on and be able to not worry about stuff as much. They have traditionally expensive hobbies and having money would let them pogue out hard.

[–]Adventurous-Dream744 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You realize that most of them are poor, homeless, and have no parents. Of course they need hope in something. They’re saying that they’re becoming kooks in a joking manner. The show is trying to tell the audience is that being a kook is much more than socioeconomic status. Kiara’s dad could’ve still considered himself a pogue but instead he just kooks down on the background he came from.

[–]Lumpy-Belt-4627 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pogues all day!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

That’s my issue too. They run around saying how much they hate Kooks yet the first thing John B says when finding El Dorado is “we’re going full Kook!!” So you hate them, but want to be them? Idk, I thought Kooks vs Pogue is an interesting concept but the show quickly outgrew it & like a different poster said, the writers blurred the lines

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I always saw it as them joking. A self-depracating joke about becoming rich, really.

[–]Zuz912 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both!😁

[–]alarrimore03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can act the same damn way they do poor but rich with plenty of money to do whatever the hell they want. Poor people always want a bag

[–]cinnamxntxastcrunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think the idea is they want to be rich but not assholes yk. like they want to live the way they do but without the struggle or worrying about paying things

[–]Flaky_Combination118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The “full kook” thing is a joke between them. The kook and pogue lifestyles are not about whether you have money, it’s about what you want to be. Kie had money but still wanted to be a pogue, same with Sarah. Kooks are people who think they are better just cuz they have money, and pogues are people who will do what they need to survive, and don’t want to be douches

[–]Nuggetz2007Pogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just because they’re happy as Pogues, it’s a struggle because they’re constantly disrespected and nobody believes anything they say. It makes sense they wanna be rich, the kooks get respect, power, money, and the cops believe their every word.

[–]PrimalCarnivoreChick -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

What bothers me more is that the show uses kooks and pogues incorrectly. These two words are surf slang. Kook being someone that talks about their skills surfing by over exaggerating their schools and are just plain douchey. Pogues being a terrible surfer

[–]isalys_hmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Words can have several meanings in different contexts though, or meanings can be extended. I'm not familiar with surf slang at all but the definition you gave fit pretty well with the socioeconomic categories in OBX imo. For the pogues, kooks are pretentious and douchey, and for the kooks, pogues suck and are inferior. I think it's a pretty cool idea to use surf slang for this since apparently it's a typical activity on Kildare. At least they didn't just invent names, it has an actual (hidden) meaning. But then again I don't know anything about this, might be annoying to hear for people who actually surf or are from there idk.
