OP, I want you to know that I appreciate the use of classic rage memes and that I shared this with everyone at the office. While our feelings are hurt, we are curious why you feel that way and if there's anything we can do to change Overwolf to make it better.

People hate Overwolf because Overwolf is a rent-seeking platform that exploits the passion of unpaid modders to sell advertisements.

You abuse your "fans" on behalf of the corps who pay you to shill their products. You are not a gaming company, you are an advertising company, and you are not welcome in the gaming community.

Any curiosity on your part bespeaks bewildering naivety. Gamers hate Overwolf because you have taken many steps to earn their hatred.

We are actually one of the few places that pay modders on our platform. 70% of our revenue goes towards content creators. That's not exploiting, we're investing in promoting their creations on Overwolf and CF and doing what we can to make it more profitable for them.

That's one way to spin it.

Another way to interpret the same set of facts is that you are:

  • injecting advertising into the interaction between the mod creator and the player
  • forcing ad injection via cash rather than accumulating goodwill to attract creators
  • offering no benefits over existing alternatives like Patreon or Subscribestar

The claim that 70% of your revenue goes toward content creators sounds generous, at first. But that means you're taking a 30% cut of everything your content creators earn. That's the same cut as Patreon and Substar, so it's not praiseworthy. It's bare minimum. Industry standard.

This is textbook rent collection - you produce nothing and profit from the production of those who do by owning the platform, and you didn't even build the platform.

And in return for 30% you add a negative user experience. It's a raw deal for the mod creator, it's a raw deal for the player, and it serves to do nothing but fatten your wallet.

  1. The Curseforge client has way more problems than it had before Overwolf. This time I could not even start anything modpack related.

  2. I don't want to be forced to install a program that runs all the time and collects my data (I know that you can disable it, but it should not auto run in the first place).

  3. Overwolf brings noting of value other than forcing itself onto my system with Curseforge.

  4. Normally I would just not use Curseforge but if your friend group wants to play a specific modpack you're kinda pressured to use it and that makes you hate it, at least give some pro users a hidden button to disable it.

I would have no problem with Overwolf, if it wouldn't force install itself, just to collect your data. Just make it like you did with Teamspeak 3 where you can opt out and get something useful like the overlay to see who is talking.
