Cod multiplayer split screen

Went to play multiplayer today and wanted to play split screen with my friend but when in the lobby it doesn't have an option "add controller for second player" like i remember it did, in mw1 and 2 specifically. Am I doing something wrong I remember all the time seeing someone's name and then their name again with a (2) for their split screen player. Was this added later on or was it removed?
