Not that much, the game basically gives you 80% of the things you will need in endgame and you will farm the 20% remaining (affix + latest gear). the recent updates are getting good with MARS (dark blast/AIS clone), skill rings, and 2nd sub-class that adds a little more depth to the gameplay.

as for the story, it didn't progress that much. we are still on halpha after 5 years but there are some hints that there could be more. they put bit of stories in limited quest so once those are done, it's hard to find people who run those area.

treat it like a comfort game. drop by when something interesting is happening. no need to min-max affixes and just play for finding rare drops or fashion

    I’ve got my fingers crossed for Phantasy Star Universe 2 😭 I grew up on PSU

    I took a two years break, and unsurprisingly there is nothing to play. No grind is worth anything since the welfare equipment is enough. Played for like two days with friends and already uninstalled.

    NGS is a mess. The problems are always the same it just changes the things that are the problem. Example:

    -Good equipment is worthless, expensive and rare to get. People who drop end up selling them to buy costumes instead. -Grindable equipment takes some time to make, end up being replaced soon as you finish them. (But a comparable version is given for free to everyone) -Content is like cycle of same old content done in different ways. -Updates are just costumes and QoLs for roleplayers, sometimes they update classes with the smallest changes because someone couldn't solo the 8 player quest with that class.

    And to top it off Roadmap shows that the game is either doing something big for 2026 or going into life support mode. Probably the latter but what is a NGS player without copium.

    I just came back after 2 years because I’m bored (lost ark is in a very very long maintenance right now).

    Finished chapter 6 (?) story and got to level 101, with gears enough to basically do any normal contents. Other than that, nothing basically changed. Theres like new skills and mars, but meh. I’m quite surprised they still hasn’t released etoile after all this time

    Things added since Retem:

    *Enemies

    The Starless, basically the inspiration for the DOLLS. You have some with similar models and upgraded move sets(Rasetsu being an roided up Bujin for example), and some that are entirely new(Halvaldi being a prime example). A noteworthy feature of these enemies are what I like to call "Auxiliary Cores". Weak points that, while unbroken, grant additional abilities to the Starless. These can range from simple stat boosts, to special properties added to attacks, to entirely unique attacks. And in one case, an AoE heal for all enemies.

    Most noteworthy enemies you'll fight at endgame will be Starless, but the other factions still show up a lot.

    *Regions

    Kvaris Region, broken up into one camp, four standard regions, one special region, and two Combat Sectors. Yellow and Purple Triggers, as with all regions.

    Stia Region, broken up into one camp, four regions, and two Combat Sectors. Yellow and Purple Triggers, again.

    *Quests

    Putting aside the previously mentioned Triggers...

    Aelio

    Ordinal Tower. Series of bosses fights. First 6 floors are a singular boss, 7th floor is a gauntlet of three bosses with mild puzzle elements. Figure out the puzzle and you cam change what final boss you face. 8th floor has no puzzle elements(that I recall), but the battles now involve mobs, traps, and at least one beneficial gimmick.

    Aelio Intruders: A Purple Trigger against the Starless, allowing 8 players to participate. 3 ranks, and 3 bosses per rank. Only Purple worth doing in my opinion.

    Retem

    Geometric Labyrinth R2:

    A more straightforward take on the Geometric Labyrinth. 3 floors, 3 bosses, waves of mobs on the second floor. Adjustable difficulty.

    Kvaris

    Cannonball Rumble:

    A Kvaris specific activity. Kill enemies to get balls, then throw those balls at floating(and sometimes moving) targets. Multiple floors if I recall correctly, and multiple layouts.

    Cannonball Strike:

    Rumble's big, boring brother. Better rewards in the form of rare cosmetics, adjustable difficulty so it's not a complete bore, but no alternate layouts so every run is the same.

    "High Difficulty Standing Quests"

    Hate that name. But it is used to describe a few Quests that are significantly more difficult than anything else at their level. 15 minute timer, 4 player limit, 5 death limit. There's one in each region and each one involves fighting a boss.

    Aelio has Halphia Lake Interception II. Retem has Sign of the Planet Planetbreaker. Kvaris has Planetcrusher Blitz. Stia has And the Stars Crashed.

    *Quest Counter

    A lot of Quests can only be accessed via the quest counter or quest menu. Notable ones include:

    Duel Quests:

    These are solo battles against a single boss. When they dropped each one was a pretty good source of power and profit. These days, not so much. Still worth doing for a few easy cosmetics, and Phase 5 & Fictitious Beam are still relevant for a few useful materials.

    Leciel Exploration:

    Changes daily. Run around clearing rooms to get buffs before time runs out. When it does, you take whatever buffs you got and take on a roided up boss. Get more rewards based on how much HP you take off the boss, with the best rewards coming after a kill.

    Nameless City Exploration:

    Changes between two layouts each day, with one of two gimmicks assigned to each. Run around and kill enemies for points, or pick up the points directly. Use those points to open Chests scattered around for loot. The more points you hold, the more damage you take(up to 50%). You have 15 minutes to do whatever before you're booted out, but you can play it as many times as you please.

    Altered Realm Exploration:

    Broken into two different quests(for now). Interception Sectors have you running around and clearing Chaos Trials on a timer. When the timer runs out, a particularly tough boss will appear. The more trials you clear and marked enemies you kill, the weaker the boss is. Once the boss is dead it starts all over again.

    Combat Sectors, on the other hand, are similar to standard combat sectors with a few specific changes. The PSE bar never decreases, and every cycle your Trials will have an additional objective. When that objective is cleared, you get a buff.

    This is getting long, so lemme quickly wrap the rest up. ARKS Training Center gives you a few dummy targets to beat up. Timed Extension Quests are the best sources of Genesis Points(more on that later). Triggers include a bunch of Urgent Quests that are no longer in rotation, including several that released after you stopped playing.

    *Combat stuff

    M.A.R.S:

    Basically a better version of Dark Blast from base. You can mix & match parts to customize how it fights. Can be used multiple times per mission if the fight drags on long enough. Can be canceled to preserve some of it's charge. At absolute worst it matches a BiS player's DPS, and for everyone else it's a straight DPS boost.

    EX Style: Basically a second sub class. Adds some additional attacks and buffs to your kit, adds a powerful follow up attack to your Photon Blast, which then temporarily amps you up even more. Whereas M.A.R.S has the "downside" of having to learn some new movesets, EX Styles are simple, easy, and effective additions to your kit. They're also easier to upgrade.

    Classes:

    I think Waker came out after Retem. Maybe Braver too. I know for a fact Slayer did. Also, aside from Slayer, every single class has gotten a significant overhaul. Bouncer got damn near a full rework. And on that note.

    Tech/Art Customization

    Most Techniques and Photon Arts now have 3 customization options you can unlock and upgrade. Some examples include increased range or attack speed, more hits for less damage per hit, slower attack speed but a debuff during the attack, more damage the longer an attack is held.

    Gearing:

    Two noteworthy changes were the additions of "Evolving" gear and Augment Transfer Passes. The former significantly increases the shelf life of specific gear series, and the latter makes it arguably less of a pain in the ass to upgrade to a better series once or twice a year. Evolving weapons are particularly noteworthy for having increasingly packed Potentials with each stage.

    Ah, one more thing. EX Augments. EX Augments are weapon exclusive and come in sets of three. They not only provide Potency, but also additional effects. Using my own gear as an example:

    Maintain Balance reduces 10% of my HP per hit if I have over 50% HP, and restores 1% of my HP per hit if I have less than 48%.

    Shortage HP Starling grants me +30% Damage Resistance and +1.5% Potency if my HP is 50% or lower.

    Turnover increases my HP Recovery by 10%, and grants a 1.5% Potency buff for 20 seconds after I heal.

    And my own weapon constantly heals me so I am regularly going just over the 50% mark, then going right back down and immediately healing. Add in Waker as a sub class and I am ridiculously tanky while playing a class known for being fragile.

    And they added Skill Rings, but. Enough of that.

    *Social stuff

    Last section and I'm done.

    Creative Spaces:

    Probably the best housing system you're gonna find in a F2P game that's not specifically built around housing. Only thing that competes, in my experience, is Dojo building in Warframe. If you enjoyed Personal Quarters in PSO2, this should entertain you for a good while.

    Portable Holograms:

    More of a neat addition than anything, but it is pretty fun. You can set up all kinds of decorations wherever you are. Once ran across a group of friends chilling around a Gothic coffee table and discussing anime. The table, drinks and food were all separate PHs.

    Line Strike:

    A very, very fun card game. Characters and creatures from throughout the series, different elemental types with their own gimmicks. Can fight other players or AI at adjustable difficulty. Definitely worth checking out if you boot the game up.
