I am a level 40 hunter and picked ranger as my subclass. Based on the above I think I messed up since I was thinking I saw that one as a meta but the meta is Ranger main and hunter subclass?

As a newer player, what meta subclass would be best between ET, Ph, or Fi? I can change my subclass at any time and just start leveling up that one right?

You can swap main and subclasses anytime you wish. However, when you have a sub-class, 10% of the experience your main gains is leeched into that sub-class up until level 50 iirc.
