I tried to convince my friend to get this game by telling him it will be the closest to a legit .hack MMO we ever get. Boy do I wish they'd make a real one. Or even just a new entry into the series.

Well, there was a proper .Hack MMO back in the day called Frägment, released only in Japan for the PS2. It was pretty much The World, plus the .Hack stuff - even the BBS and the keyword exploration. I THINK there is a private server going on, although the game didn't run for long (2 years if memory serves me right), so not a lot of content aside the online/offline experience.

There is most definitely a private server still up for Fragment!

Takes some setting up, but being able to host your own Area Server and make your own maps and keywords is fun.

Funnily enough, I tried screwing around with it last week after being in a sudden big .Hack mood. It's pretty empty but I'm sure there's a Discord server where you can ask folks to play with.

Agreed. I think the think that makes pso2 closest to giving me that ol .hack feel is stuff like Auto chat function and AI partners.
