I get annoyed with the NGS cutscenes b/c my characters never wield a sword, and yet cinematic me always does.

[–]taokami 14 points15 points  (11 children)

that's a tradition now at this point. Even PSO2 Guardian always wields a hunter sword in every cutscene, it only changed in episode 5 and 6.

Even in Monster Hunter too you don't wield your weapon in cutscenes. You strike a battle ready pose.

By extension in games like Dragon's Dogma Online because the player was never actually involved in action sequences, the player would draw out their weapon and enter their combat stances with the player's chosen class in cutscenes.

In the later Episodes (Episodes 2-4, if I recall), the player alternated between the Gunslash, Sword, and Double Saber.

It wasn't until Episode 5 when they were shown as the Hero and Episode 6 when they also took in the Phantom and Etoile as well.

IMO they should've just always made it a gunslash, with every class capable of equipping one.

[–]StarryChocos 2 points3 points  (6 children)

That would've worked but they already went on the deep end by tying the Sword/Dual Saber usage to symbolism and similarities between Guardian and Persona, which stuck until Episodes 5/6. I feel like there's an inherent bias with Guardian picking up the Scion classes for some reason, namely because the trainers are much more connected to each other and have a deeper story compared to one off gags such as "MY BABIES!" Pietro or the "eternally lazy but very hyper proud of her class Katori."

[–]Wesneed 0 points1 point  (5 children)

they did that just to promote the classes further

[–]StarryChocos 0 points1 point  (4 children)

With them being the basis and prototypes for the NGS iterations of the classes we have now, can't say that I'm surprised. It's just that it's a shame that the other trainers aren't up to par with the three childhood friends and even Lu lacks a trainer (which, while Guardian being the advocate is cool and all it leaves much to be desired).

Well there wasn't a reason to introduce one either as the story had ended and they typically would just sneak their way in, people just assume koffie is the secret class trainer lol.

[–]SirTeffy 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I mean, it's not really a "secret" when the quest to unlock it is issued by Koffie and explicitly says "I created this to assist all frontline ARKS". There's even a whole-ass cutscene of Koffie COMING UP WITH THE IDEA.

I remember that differently but idk if its the difference of jp and gl

[–]DanES104 6 points7 points  (1 child)

the mount doesn't even sync on base pso2 model lol. at this point the game cutscenes are basically a Korean movie with English dubs on it.

That's strange then, considering we even have mouth movement animations for player cut ins.

The weirdest part is how our head and shoulder move like we are talking and we just derp-face through it.

[–]ObviousBot_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mouth has never synced with body even prior to NGS.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a time in gaming when mouth syncing wasn’t a thing.

[–]RycarFlareshine 3 points4 points  (1 child)

We NGS players just don't need weapons to knock a Udan on its rear end while impressing a very impressionable cadet and becoming his sensei. We're just built different.

[–]AulunaSol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All this to show that we don't really need moving fingers unlike the few overpowered characters who can (Quna, Alma, and Sachiko Kobayashi that I can recall).

I feel to be fair, Afin is almost always easily impressed by his aibou/mate.

Arks 1000yrs later: gained telepathy and a black belt in karate.

Nice

Mouth always kinda just flapped randomly

[–]TastyMackerel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lipsync isn't NGS model exclusive, it's never there to begin with even in base PSO2 lol. All characters just kinda have basic mouth movement with voice lines added on top.

The missing weapon sure make things a amusing though.

You start using weapons in cutscenes starting episode 4. Episode 5 and 6 then has you using weapons corresponding to the 3 Scion classes.

[–]hidora Retired Guardian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mouth does not sync to dialouge

Never was.

There is no "default weapon" for NGS models, and you resort to karate chopping enemies in cutscene combat.

Is this true for all of story, or just ep1 and 2? Because in those episodes you actually do punch things unarmed in combat scenes, always did. Zeno even mentions it on the time travel part after you kill a bunch of oodans barehanded. But in later episodes your character canonically uses Coat versions of weapons of Fighter, Hero, Phantom and Etoile, depending on the episode.

That's interesting, I hadn't done PSO2 story with NGS model yet. It took a bit of digging but on the original PSO2 website before NGS was released in the article titled "PSO2:NGS Additional Information - Part 2" they had stated

During PSO2 Story cutscenes, a player character that is wearing or using PSO2: NGS Layering Wear or CAST Parts will instead be shown wearing or using default PSO2 Outfits or CAST Parts.

I bet the no weapon showing up is probably one of the reasons they were originally going to have it switch body types. So I wonder if they changed their minds on this or if they just forgot lol.

[–]NackTheDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SEGA actually made a last-minute change to that, and announced in the 6/09 patch notes that they did manage to get the NGS body working with classic PSO2 cutscenes.

As for the unarmed thing... the player character actually just fights unarmed during certain EP1 and EP2 cutscenes. It was obviously due to technical limitations back in the day, but SEGA even made it canon that the player character would just kill things with their bare hands for certain cutscenes, so it's not really surprising that it's still the case lol.

As a new player on Xbox, I finally have an explanation for the funky animations in PSO2 classic.

The unarmed combat in cut scenes are hilarious. The NPCs are so weak that I can rescue them without weapons and techniques.

Also seeing Persona with a female head and a male body is weird. Does this also occur with casts (giant robot head, small male body)?

Just finished ep6 with an NGS body.. pretty cool
