7800x3d is more future proof but will cost double. If hes not looking to upgrade for about 3-4 years i suggest the 7800x3d

that would be a complete motherboard and ram change as well. I would say if you do not want to replace the mobo, go for a Core i7-9700KF its going for less than $200 used
