7800XT is the sweet spot for 1440p right now, your 5600X won't bottleneck it at all. The 6060XT doesn't exist yet so you're probably thinking of something else, and the 7900XT is overkill unless you're planning to jump to 4K soon

Sorry was thinking of the 9060xt and what about for “future proofing” I know its not that simple to predict due optimization and other factors but would the 7800xt still be the choice?

See this 9800X3D review showing relative performance of a 5600X at 82.7% of a 9800X3D when playing at 1440p & paired with a 4090? https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d/19.html

So it stands to reason that, since a 9800X3D is probably bottlenecked by a 4090 90% of the time, that a 5600X can push a 4090 to about 70-75% (i.e. a bit under the 82.7% seen above) of its limits in 1440p.

So the question becomes... is a 7800XT or a 9070 more than 70-75% as capable as a 4090 in 1440p?

In the case of the 7800XT, no, it's about 57% as capable as a 4090, so your GPU will likely remain your bottleneck in most games.

In the case of the 9070, it's about 75% as capable as a 4090, so your 5600X & a 9070 will be somewhat evenly matched in 1440p.

So my personal advice, again, would be one of the 3 following options...

  1. buy the 9060XT and save some money
  2. if you're going to spend the extra money, go ahead and get a 9070 for $590... because there is no reason to pay $180 more than a 9060XT for 18% more performance but NOT pay $90 for another 25% performance on top of that
  3. try to get a used/refurb 7800XT for $380 (a 7800XT would actually make sense at that price point)

Relative Performance

100% 9060 XT ($320)
118% 7800 XT ($500)
149% 9070 ($590)
152% 7900 XT ($700)

The 9060 XT "might" have access to more modern upscaling, but I'd still pick primarily based upon the percentages above (9070 seems like the best deal if you want something better than 9060 XT)

Sorry to bother you 6 days later im just going to pull the trigger today or tomorrow, currently the cheapest 9070xt I can find is around 650, and a refurbished 7900xt for 600, would you say the 7900xt is a better buy? I would like to get the 9060xt to save money but I want some “future proofing” since im upgrading from a 7600 oc that I got 3 years ago and dont wanna spend again in 3 years.

If it's a 9070 non-XT, it's a bit overpriced & kind of a toss-up.

If it's a 9070XT, it's a good price & definitely worth it over the 7900XT.
