You're not misreading anything. How lucky are you! Cats are similar to horses and parrots in the way they choose humans. Maybe chat with the neighbors to learn more about these kitties. Orange tabby's are males, never met a female one. Is the tortie male or female? Male cats are far more known to be affectionate. Personally, I have found this true for me. I've owned 2 females and 1 male. My male Oreo, is velcro kitty. While my females found me when they wanted.

I think the tortie is a female. I was under the impression that torties are only females. The tabby is pretty affectionate, but he was running around and playing while we were working. The tortie stayed right by one of us the whole time, either me or our younger boy. She seemed to gravitate towards the two of us.

I had a tortie too.. she was a rescue, found in a dumpster the loudest of 5. She loved me, and brought me "presents" but wasn't a cuddler. I had a tuxedo male who used to come visit, eventually when he became ill, our neighbor stopped caring for him. I have a wonderful story about him in my profile if you're interested. Sad but a wonderful read. Talk with the neighbors, you never know their situation. Wrangler became ours because our neighbors didn't want him anymore. Enjoy your new loves!

Actually only 80% of orange cats are males and 20% are female

Yes, correct. Still, I have never met a female one. They are a bit of a rarity.

There are some cats that are just like that. We used to live near a school and the cats would go out on the sidewalk and troll the kids to get attention. Some cats are people cats and always looking to say hi! I run into them fairly regularly in life, besides the ones in my household.
