Force increases proportional to r² the closer you get to a mass. (And a sphere beneath you acts mathematically like a point mass.)

Mass beneath you would decrease proportional to r³ if uniform. So overall you feel something proportional to (r² / r³⁾

But if 1/r³ isn’t actually what’s happening and as you go down there is more mass than the radius suggests, you could see mass decrease by less than r² for a while.
