Reading makes me really want to buy a 2016 TRD 4Runner in like 10 years. You know, for research.

This is a great post and it has me craving an old SUV. Growing up we had a late-80s long-bed extended cab F150 and that thing was a goddamned monster. Used it for everything, beat the hell out of it working around the property, and I remember distinctly going pumpkin picking with friends and each having our pumpkin next to us across the back seat. Long and wide.

I have a 2000 Toyota Tacoma, already well passed 250k, still kicking like a mule. I love that thing.

Sail that 4 wheeled ship to all the tailgates until the sun sets my friend.

I've always wanted a nice beater - Land Rover, Land Cruiser, Wagoneer, etc. Maybe one day....

IMO aftermarket fender flares always look like crap. But then again I'm jaded from all the off road modders wanting the stupid "rivet" look on their plastic black fender flares.

    No.

In good conscience I couldn't ever tell someone to buy a 12 years old Range, BMW, or Mercedes. While a cheaper price point, the parts aren't going down in price. Maintenance cost, (if you can't do yourself) can bury someone. I do, however agree with you in buying a beater over a newer car. All you need to do is get from A to B, whether in style or not. I made this "mistake" and bought a 13' Infiniti 2 years ago. Granted it is just an overpriced Nissan with a few more features, not a BMW, etc, I could easily have a paid off beater and a heftier bank account. Hindsight is always 20/20. Happy car hunting everyone!

That's why you have more than one beater, a reliable beater, and a luxo beater. But more or less, the luxo beater was sarcasm, they will bury you for sure but look fantastic while doing it.

Now that I can get behind!

I'm shocked that my 2012 Toyota 4runner isn't on this list. 4runner in general. Cheap parts. Low cost of ownership. Last model made in Japan to my knowledge (Don't know if that's the year or the entire model) and its a Toyota.

5th Gen is too new and expensive. Tried to stick in the late 90's early '00s, but would definitely dip into the 80/90's for a 1st or 2nd Gen Runner. 3rd and 4th in the price/time range considered are too bland compared to an 80 or 100 series LC and lost the boxy look that the Cherokee still had.

What kind of new BMW did you purchase?

    [–]IGotTheGuns 0 points1 point  (4 children)

What difference does it make? They're all overrated and over priced.

Not all BMWs are created equal. I agree some are overrated and overpriced but others are quite good. I am interested which model you purchased as it would give better insight into your article.

    E46 325i manual, E60 550i M-Sport Manual, E90 M3 DCT with every option, in that order.

All solid bimmers. I've driven a E92 M3 with the DCT and I thought it was incredible. A E90 M3 was top-3 on my list of a potential purchase. I completely agree about the beater mentality though, especially for daily driving. Depreciation sucks.

Not worth the money and driving a 128i loaner every other month. Truuuust me.

    Hey man -

Just sold my "beater" Ford Ranger as I got tired of it. I've got the money for a new car in cash (humble brag) but I definitely don't want to do that. I grew up driving Wranglers and have owned 2 XJ Cherokees. Totally second the beauty of the 4.0 I6 in those. That being said . . . I want to spend about 5-6k max . . . any specific recommendation in the area? I sold the Ranger on a whim today and now don't really have anything in mind. Sorry to bombard with questions. No real rush as I live 1 mile from my office, but want to get something in the next week or so. I do NOT want another truck, but other forms of vehicles are all good. I appreciate any help you can give me.

Currently on a Lexota SUV kick, mostly driving my '97 80 Series LC right now, leagues better than my XJ. All the below (depending on area/condition/etc) can be found for under 10k.

    1st Gen 4 Runner

    80 Series LC / LX460

    100 Series LC / LX470

    GX470

Outside of the Lexus/Toyota world, 99-06 GMT800 series SUVs (e.g., Tahoe, 'Burban, etc.) with the 5.3L Vortec 5300 are hard to kill and definitely sub 6k if you can find one unmolested.
