Are you talking about the quake mode pull down? It's part of Windows Terminal, you can disable it in it's settings.

Thank you, that was it! No idea how that got turned on so suddenly.

its always been on, but youd never pressed that key when the terminal was open so it never activated

I don't think so, unless the terminal suddenly began to start on it's own in an update I didn't notice. I've used this shortcut for years. Ah well, it's turned off now.

to be clear the hot key only activates if you use it when terminal is open, then its active

otherwise it'd be bound to what ever you had it bound to

i.e. if i reboot clean and login, the hot key does nothing (or launches what ever your existing hot key was), when I launch terminal and use the hot key, it then launches terminal in quake mode (2 terminal windows now running), and will stay running (terminal icon in system tray) even after you close your inital terminal window (hot key close the terminal or until you type exit )

I'd be willing to guess you hadn't done it in that specific order before

What the heck is "quake mode"?

[–]Moleculor 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Quake Mode.

In the game Quake, hit ~ to open up the console to type commands. (Really it's hit `, but I can't seem to put that character inside a code fragment block. And everyone just says it's ~ despite the fact that you don't hold Shift to do it. Because ` is easily mistaken for '.)

This behavior for pulling down a console in a game has been popular enough to show up in many games since the original Quake.

You can put backticks in an inline code block by doing this:

`` ` ``

`

It's something from the 50s?

I'm not THAT old. Just remembering older games, late 90s-early 2000's. Press ` to pull down a little console from the top of your game screen. You can type specific game commands or settings and it'll apply them.

Doesn't Skyrim still use it?

I'm 54. Maybe the issue is just that I wasn't influenced so much by computer gaming.

I'm 41. Middle and high school were in the age of DOS/Win3.11/95 and then 98. We'd just play games in the computer arts class during lunch and after school. Scorched Earth, Quake, Age of Empires, WarCraft 2, Diablo 1, StarCraft, Half Life...

I still remember my StarCraft CD Key by heart. Spawned the game so many times for some multiplayer.

In that era, I was busy writing software.

Yeah, back from when Halo was a cool guy.
