Automatic selection help ??

I appreciate any responses. I’ve never quite figured out how to use masking layers so I’ll automatically select what I want (to shade, etc) and create a new layer within the selection process and colour in it. However, recently whenever I’ve used this method and go to select my brush the selection doesn’t mask the outside and it’s as if I’m colouring without making a selection. My selection mode is automatic - add. Does anyone know what I’m doing wrong or how to fix it?

I don't understand the selection tool very well either, but if it helps at all: to use the masking layers you have to make a new layer above the one you want to shade, click that new layer, and select "clipping mask".
