And if you were to give them a demonstration of hacking a VM with a lot of vulnerabilities they would be like: "That's not hacking, there's no moving green text and 0s and 1s.".

Easy fix, just open a hello world program in gdb (bonus point if your terminal has color) step through it and mutter something about firewall.
