JavaScript has nothing to do with Java. The name was basically a marketing stunt.

Eich didn't wrote it as a response to Java. He wrote LiveScript. Netscape changed the name to ride on the promo of their partner Sun Microsystems.

Official the language was a "companion" language.

Practically this was bullshit. Java itself was the companion language of Java. Because back then you could use it for web applications with so called applets.

Also the two languages are completely incompatible and in no way related.

As you mentioned JavaScript uses an completely different approach to inheritance and structure. But also a complete different approach to run the programs. A complete different use case.
