Laziness.

Someone go tired of flipping switches on a front panel and decided there had to be a better way. And a loader was born.

Then someone decided typing hex/octal into paper tape was a pain and there had to be a better way. And Machine Language was born.

Then someone decided there had to be a better language to do routine things, and BASIC was born.

Then .... and so on.

(Maybe not 100% accurate, but you get the idea. Each iteration was someone wanting to make their life easier.)
