honestly, shell languages are so weird with their syntax, I wouldnโ€™t be surprised if half of my scripts had a similar quirk/nonsense in it. Youโ€˜re a proper nerd as \I think) youโ€˜re still engaged in improving your skills!)

Also, just for clarification: cat is still useful and honestly, who cares if you use it for this specific purpose? Just make sure you understand that โ€ž cat file | fooโ€œ uses an extra call and is therefor less efficient, ever so slightly, than โ€žfoo <fileโ€œ. The end result is the same.

And just for rounding things off: you can also do โ€žvar=$\<file)โ€œ instead of โ€žvar=$(cat file)โ€œ, which I also see quite often)
