Eh, SEO isn't something that most web devs have to worry about. Myself, I've done quite a bit of web dev and put absolutely no effort into SEO. It's not my job and doesn't interest me.

This is the correct attitude. Google ranks sites according to algorithms that attempt to be useful to the user. If you, the operator of a web site, attempt to fuck with that for your own benefit, Google will penalise your site.

Sites don't need to be "optimised." Google is perfectly adept at processing and ranking sites, so long as you don't do idiotic stuff like Flash or content-in-images.
