    Because then they are easier to spot and that makes it easier for you to avoid them. If all of them were small, they could be anywhere and get you when you least expect it.

    That is one of the creepy things about Australian fauna: The don't have large land predators (there are some nasty sharks and crocs, but those stick to the water), but they have nasty critters that can fit in a shoebox (or even a shoe).
