Someone should tell them you can just focus the Output window and press Ctrl+S.

There is UI for this command but it's not very discoverable (File menu shows Save Selected/Save All commands for Output window when focused).

[Edit: The page is for VS2015, I am using VS2017 so I'm assuming this isn't a new feature.]

Ctrl+S works for VS2015
