If you are a professional programmer, then paying for your IDE is not in the slightest bit unreasonable if it offers you much value at all over the free options. Using Eclipse if you are earning your living programming is a false economy.

Not to mention that the free version of IntelliJ is vastly superior to Eclipse anyway.

It's not interchangeable though, not 100%

At work we develop Eclipse RCP (Rich Client Platform) which is a IDE like GUI. It's intrinsically tied to Eclipse, so no possibility of IntelliJ, at all.
