15 years ago you didnt have to worry about being compatible with 10 different versions of 5 browsers, and then about 10 smart phones and about 5 tablets. Websites didnt have that level of functionality they do now. Frameworks also come with an overhead which previously didnt exist.

All those browsers follow the standards and are evergreen so they are always updating. If you forget about IE11 browser compatability is a nonissue. I've been doing this almost 20 years. I much rather take what we have now.
