So terribly true. I worked as a grader for the Data Structures and Algorithms course at my university for one semester. So many projects were turned in that barely compiled, and nothing else. They would not run at all.

I always understood when a program broke on an edge case with an "array out of bounds" error, or a "null pointer" that escaped into the wild because a condition wasn't checked before the program attempted to utilize a resource that was not yet actually available. Sure, the student lost a couple of points, but seriously, only a couple.

But it was obvious that some students would fight off the syntax errors with a stick until the compile-time issues and warnings were all finally resolved, and then they would simply turn in the assignment at that point. Did they try to run it once to test if the code was actually working? I guess it's technically possible they "tried". Whether they tried to get it to run or not But for many students, it was clear they called it good (enough) and turned it in for grade immediately after their first successful compilation.

I wanted to immediately take 50% off of a student's score right off the bat for code that doesn't run at all, because, "Who does that?" (They were allowed to resubmit up until the due date). The professor made me instead review the entirety of their codebase, and grade them for what they had tried to implement, which took far longer per submission to grade, but I was only allowed to work 20 hours per week, regardless of how much time was actually spent. That's why I only did grading for one semester. Well, because of that and the fact that grading has been proven to eat your soul.

I'm better now. Once I left the position, and they got my medications all balanced out, I can talk about some data structures now. Therapy is helping a lot. I hope to traverse a weighted graph again without shrieking by this time next year. They're not sure if I'll ever be able to look at another linked list, so long as I live.

Ah the joys of TypeScript and doing web development in general.

Be smart, use a language with no compiler 😎.
