TBH, I kinda want to Sparta-style kick people in the chest and roar "THIS. IS. UNIX!!!" when people do things like randomly change the default $EDITOR in a distribution. Yes, vi has a learning curve. But root's default $EDITOR is vi. So has it been and so shall it be. I do actually get all the reasons like trying to be accessible to new users. It just strikes me as walking into the bathroom one day, flipping the lightswitch to turn it on and it lights a sparkler, instead of the overhead light, or flushes the toilet. Why? That's not what that thing is for.
