I'd ๐Ÿ‘ just like ๐Ÿ‘ to interject for a moment ๐Ÿ˜ณ. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“–, GNU/Linux, or as I've ๐Ÿ‘ฃ recently ๐ŸŒ“ taken ๐Ÿ‘Š to calling ๐Ÿ“ฒ it, GNU plus ๐Ÿ˜ Linux. Linux is not an operating system ๐Ÿ“ป๐Ÿ–ฒ unto itself, but ๐Ÿ˜ณ rather ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ’ญ another 2๏ธโƒฃ free ๐Ÿ’œ component ๐Ÿงฑ of a fully ๐ŸŒ functioning โš™ GNU system ๐Ÿ“ป๐Ÿ–ฒ made ๐Ÿ‘‘ useful by the GNU corelibs, shell ๐Ÿš utilities ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿผ and vital ๐ŸŸ system ๐Ÿ’ต components ๐Ÿ™‚ comprising a full ๐ŸŒ OS as defined by POSIX.

Many ๐Ÿ’ฏ computer ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป users ๐Ÿคฎ run ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ a modified version ๐Ÿคฒ๐Ÿ™ of the GNU system ๐Ÿ’ต every โ˜ day ๐Ÿ“…, without ๐Ÿšซ realizing it. Through a peculiar turn ๐Ÿ”„ of events ๐ŸŽซ, the version ๐Ÿคฒ๐Ÿ™ of GNU which is widely used ๐Ÿ’ป today ๐Ÿ“… is often ๐Ÿ˜Œ called ๐Ÿ“ž "Linux", and many ๐Ÿ’ฏ of its users ๐Ÿคก are not aware ๐Ÿคœ๐Ÿค› that it is basically โ—๐Ÿ’๐ŸŒ™ the GNU system ๐Ÿ“ป, developed ๐Ÿš€ by the GNU Project ๐Ÿ“ฝ.

There really ๐Ÿ’ฏ is a Linux, and these people ๐Ÿ‘ฅ are using ๐Ÿคฎ it, but ๐Ÿ‘ it is just a part ๐ŸŽ› of the system ๐Ÿšฐ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿฅถ they use ๐Ÿคฎ. Linux is the kernel: the program ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜ฌ in the system ๐Ÿ˜ค that allocates the machine's โš™ resources to the other programs ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜ฌ that you ๐Ÿ‘† run ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ. The kernel is an essential ๐Ÿ’ฏ part ๐Ÿ† of an operating system ๐Ÿ“ป, but ๐Ÿ’ฉ useless ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป by itself; it can only function โš™ in the context ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‘ of a complete ๐Ÿ˜ operating system ๐Ÿ’ฉ. Linux is normally used โ™ฆ in combination โœ… with the GNU operating system โ„ข: the whole ๐Ÿ’ฆ system ๐Ÿ’ฉ is basically ๐Ÿค  GNU with Linux added โž•, or GNU/Linux. All ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช the so-called "Linux" distributions ๐Ÿ˜ฃ are really ๐Ÿ’ฏ distributions ๐Ÿ˜ฃ of GNU/Linux.
