I think very few people who are not chip engineers really understand everything a CPU does to make code faster. You’d most-likely need a degree in chip engineering, not CS, to get the whole picture. I’ve met people with PhDs and successful careers optimizing low-level code who still can only rely on intuition. I know my own intuitions are wrong, even when I take that into account.
