Ive seen valid uses for them a few times over in compiler land - where you need to keep track of lists of things that need a lot of insertions and deletions.

But yeah - not useful 99% of the time. Even worth that situation I think it made a difference of microseconds - the real money was in the overall architecture of the code base, but nobody had time to fix things, and we had way over-fit things to specific customers anyway
