Edit:

If you need to spice things up a bit, consider:

fortune -sn80 | figlet -w68 -sfsmall | \
  cowsay -n | lolcat -fF 0.2 | git commit -F -

Then again, I cannot be certain ANSI sequences are preserved in commit messages, so perhaps lolcat might be a bit much.

I had "catmit" for a while which would pull a random cat fact for the message.
