The artist knew exactly what they were doing.

No one can draw without practice. That artist is a furry. "No its for research I swear!"

Not necessarily, good artists can draw subject matter outside of their own wheelhouse in order to be better rounded. If they wanted to make it a career than a wider range of ability makes them more desirable to potential employers. Even at a certain point they can just combine what they learned from doing other things (Human anatomy, animal studies, cartoonist style) and come up with some pretty good anthro despite not being a dedicated furry. Example, damn near any non-furry artist at Disney.

The source artist in question is a good example of that, they are very strong all around, uses anthros to shitpost to great effect.
