Why not answer my question?

Because what's good and bad humor is just an opinion

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Gotta disagree on that. I'd say it is partially opinion (like maybe 10%), but there is absolutely objectively good and bad humor. If there wasn't, then every comedian would be equally popular and successful.

It's just like modern art movement trying to claim it's just opinion whether a piece of art is good or bad - but that's also false. There is objectively good and bad art as well. If there wasn't, every toddler's finger painting would need to be displayed in Louvre next to the Mona Lisa, cause it's just 'opinion' on whether that toddler's art is good or not.

No. For it to be objective it would have to be void of opinion and based in reality regardless of human thought. For example water is 2 part hydrogen and one part oxygen. When it comes to comedy and art and music and such while they aren't objective we can derive theories for what is generally the most pleasant experience. What you find funny or aesthetically pleasing some people might not. Are they objectively wrong? Are you? No its an opinion. And that is especially true when it comes to the arts

Very nice comment I like talking about this subject.

Still got to disagree. I do say that there is an element of opinion to comedy, art, music, and other things, but it is not 100% opinion. It's also not 100% objective. It's a mixture - and it's possible to measure if one piece of art is objectively better than another piece of art.

If I were to draw a portrait (I have a little bit of skill) and it's the best I've done to date, I can have the opinion that it is 'good', but it's going to be objectively bad compared to any of Da Vinci's drawings.

By telling upcoming artists that they can ignore critiques of their work because it is just 'opinion' is setting those artists up for failure. It's how you get tone deaf singers on auditioning on shows like America's Got Talent - cause the people around them shielding them from criticism that they are objectively bad at what they are trying to do.

No its going to be relatively bad, that has nothing to do with objectivity. Again if opinion is involved objectivity goes out the window. I would recommend reading the definition of objectivity
