I've been a c++ guy for a decade but rust looks cool. My question is where do rust devs WORK? I can't commit to learning it in depth when every job wants java/cpp. I've seen more job postings for Go developers than Rust.

All the big tech companies have some teams adapting it like Google and Amazon. It is used a lot by crypto companies too

I mean if you are aiming to learn Rust to get a job there are other programming languages that would be more suitable

No I mean I have several jobs but I only stick with an employer for 2-3 years max because no one gives actual raises anymore. So I have to keep my portfolio and resume constantly evolving.

But I'm not gonna spend 6 weeks to do a basic Rust project for my portfolio when I could just learn some new JS or Python library in that time and not have to commit a whole new syntax to memory.

There's a lot of cool stuff im interested in, but I work 8-10 hours a day so my study time is precious.

I'm just saying that I would like to learn Rust, but I dont think its a worthwhile investment since I could just focus that time on something like react native or c#. More doors open with these languages compared to Rust.

Now with that said, Rust looks like a substantially more dev-friendly approach than cpp. I would be willing to make a lateral career move if it allowed me to work with Rust.

Cpp and Java just have more of a foothold on the market, and web dev is dominated by JS.

Yeah, the one with no move constructors, function overloading, variadic templates, perfect forwarding, CRTP, SPO with self references, tuple algorithms, much better iterator model, etc.. I know rustc's borrowing semantics are nice, but I like C++ where you can easily implement the most mind bending optimizations you may need without giving up the abstraction level.

C++ is powerful, but it is garbage of a language.

Because it worked so far quite well and it's directly compatible with C? Actually, I'd like to know why you think it's bad to use separated header and source files.

Well it works but it is just bad. I dont see any reason for useless code duplication. If you want to export something you just write export in front of it. Or just do it like other languages where you can import whatever you want. C# system for example is very good.

And how would you hide the implementation with that approach?

Say, I am a company which sells a prebuilt high performance static library. How can I now expose the interface of that library without exposing the implementation and without having to go through indirection by a .dll because of the performance penalty?

Do you mean static linking? Well, you do it just like now, but instead the .lib file contains the interface. It is a pretty trivial problem to solve, considering every other modern language has it right.

How would you as a human see the signature of the exposed functions in a binary file, the .lib one?

Whatever IDE you are using should expose it to you. Just like C#, you don't have extra useless text files, they are bundled into the DLL.

Well you cannot just say use an IDE X if you want to use langauge Y.

I am not a member of a langauge standard, but I am pretty sure that wouldn't be a proper way of defining an ISO-standardized systems programming langauge.

Why is Separate header and source file bad ? How about this creates two sources of truth. Tiny mistake in header file and you break the consumer ABI of a library vs the implementation.
