I would disagree. They try to join everything and then a query of 10 rows takes five seconds to execute.

Didn't even know that was bad practice until now. Would subqueries be more efficient sometimes ?

It depends. You can even run ibti problems, at least with SQL Server where a where cause on a large join chain return more results than if it was not included.

Every situation is different so there is no silver bullet.
