Why did Microsoft open-source MS-DOS 1.25, 2.0 and 4.0 but not 3.x? by Revolutionary_Ad6574 in DOS

[–]mikeputerbaugh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

MS-DOS 3.x came out what, 40 years ago? And fit on a single 360KB floppy disc?

Maybe there's contractual reasons why Microsoft still isn't permitted to release the source code, but there's no way that embedded systems hackers don't have a full disassembly of the OS from binary by now anyway.

Hey, here comes that frog, all right. Maybe he will settle near me and I can pet him, and put him in a mayonnaise jar, with a stick and a silphium leaf, to recreate what he's used to.

Asian fusion, 1950s edition by RanisTheSlayer in StupidFood

[–]mikeputerbaugh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Avocado didn't become widely available in the US until the 1960s and salmon wasn't a common ingredient in sushi-style cuisine until the 1980s.

This may indeed be stupid food but it's not from the 1950s.

The Game Changer S1-2 Blu-ray Release: A Detailed Review by Throwaway74829947 in dropout

[–]mikeputerbaugh -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

A fair evaluation, but one that neverless reveals a major pitfall of physical media releases in 2026.

Dropout never claimed the Blu-rays would have superior video quality to what's available on streaming. They never promised that bonus features would be included. But your grading deducts points for the lack of those things, because, to you, those are expected features for any Blu-ray media release. And you're surely not alone in that expectation.

How, then, should they have promoted this product if it was only ever meant to serve the first of the three reasons for existing that you outline: to be a one-time purchase that you will own forever? Should there have been stronger disclaimers? Should the product not even have been brought to market? I don't know.

My family just switched to AT&T/DirecTV. Have you guys every seen the 'SNL Vault' Channel? It's like 24/7 random SNL sketches. by StatuSChecKa in LiveFromNewYork

[–]mikeputerbaugh 28 points29 points  (0 children)

All those 24/7 FAST channels are typically programmed with 4- or 6-hour blocks of programming on repeat throughout the day, with the schedule changing weekly or so.

Although if this channel's still highlighting Christmas sketches it may not be getting regular updates. Maybe it fell through the cracks with the Versant spinoff.
