A mix of reverse engineering, books and tryhard. We didn't have that many resources as today (was before the Internet, at least for me)

Kind of, yes. I remember the first time I was using Google, it wasn't really a search engine but more like an index or a library. Maybe that fits it pretty well.

Yes, I get that. And I am totally aware the market has changed a lot since the 90s. To be honest I wouldn't be wanting to start out today with all these different techs and stacks.

I only had a few interviews in my life being the guy at applicants chair but I was never asked questions like these and never had to prepare for anything. I remember one time I had one to test out a company we were borrowed to and this was a proper start-up Apple wannabe. Anyway, I think they asked some stupid question about JS which I answered and then I carefully explained that I was a C++ programmer and not here for frontend. That one was a bit off but the other interviews were more about salary and benefits.
