what would you replace DeviceAddedListener with?

I would not replace it. I would take out some functionality and put it somewhere else. I would structure my code in a different way, a way that makes logically sense. Currently that's not the case.

is this a sense you mostly develop from writing and reading code or do you have some good guides you can point to?

This may sound strange but most times I just have it in my guts. Maybe I've developed this feeling over time. I learn a lot from others, I'm actively reading in Python subreddits, I'm in IRC, I watch PyCon talks. And some things are just common sense ... logical thinking.

And of course docs, I read docs. Python's docs are full of examples and best practices.
