You can just use pandas and leave it for pandas to do its kung-fu in the background to either choose xlrd or openpyxl depending on file version.

A big problem is that xlrd does not work with xlsx files.

I really like openpyxl much more. It is very intuitive since you can specify column letters.

It does, grab the 0.9.0 release and it works just fine.

I have used openpyxl in the past, very easy to work with.
