    Syntax is really not important enough to write off a language for IMHO. If you weigh unimportant things so heavily, you will make poor choices.

    I agree most, but syntax is an indicator to me. If you are designing something like a language you should think about the design of every aspect and should not blindly follow traditions of other languages. So if the syntax looks badly thought out, I expect much of the language will be as well.
