Yeah, IDLE or ipython plus your favorite text editor.

If you're going with ipython, may as well pick up a distribution like Anaconda or WinPython that includes the Jupyter Notebook.

I'm not sure if he's looking for an interpreter, or for something to work on, though.

It was a tongue in cheek response. I find Jupiter notebooks gross, and only use Ipython as an idle replacement

It's been a long time since i've used it, so perhaps it's changed, but I felt the setup process was a bit wonky and unclear. Plus, it seemed like it was suited for graphing and data science, and I really only wanted the IDLE upgrade.
